Bus company used by Chartiers Valley was uninsured

The owner of a school bus company that was used by the Chartiers Valley School District earlier this year has been charged with 167 counts related to operating without proper insurance.
Pennsylvania State Police filed the charges May 25, but the district's transportation of students was not disrupted because the district no longer was using the firm, superintendent Brian White said.
In addition, Mr. White said, the district's insurance carrier covered the children during the time that Krawec Transit of Pittsburgh was transporting them, regardless of whether the carrier had insurance.
A Chartiers Valley spokesman said the district has its own in-house transportation crew and the Krawec firm was used only when substitute bus runs were needed.
According to a state police news release, a trooper was notified anonymously April 9 that Krawec was transporting students while not properly insured.
The trooper went to a Pittsburgh 15227 address that was listed for the company and found the location was a home with no buses nearby. He later learned the buses were kept along Route 51 in Baldwin Borough.
Inside of a bus, the trooper found an insurance card indicating coverage for the buses used for Chartiers Valley bus runs, according to the release.
The trooper called the insurance carrier and learned the policy had been canceled Oct. 5, 2011.
The trooper then went to the Chartiers Valley transportation department to find documentation that the firm had made 160 bus runs between Dec. 7, 2011, and May 25, 2012.
As a result, company owner Michael Krawec, 25, of Pittsburgh, was charged with 161 counts of failing to have required financial responsibility. He was also charged with one count each of false application for title, tampering with records or identification, securing execution of documents by deception, insurance fraud, false swearing and tampering with public records or information.
The charges were filed with Bridgeville District Judge Maureen McGraw-Desmet, who has not yet set a preliminary hearing date.
Mr. Krawec, of Baldwin Borough, could not be reached for comment.
