Benches added to memorial garden in Moon

Moon's Memorial Garden continues to evolve with the recent addition of three limestone benches that honor public safety professionals, members of the military and the victims and first responders of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the twin towers in New York City.
The gray benches were unveiled May 30. Each is engraved with a message honoring those who served and donors' names: NOVA Chemicals, Clearview Federal Credit Union and 1st Out Specialty Vehicles and Equipment.
Last September, on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, the Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company and the municipality dedicated an 898-pound piece of steel from the World Trade Center, installed as an integral part of the garden.
The new benches have been placed on the inner circle of the Memorial Garden between the municipal building and the public safety building at 1000 Beaver Grade Road.
The memorial includes three eco-friendly rain gardens, planted last year by volunteer FedEx employees.
The Audubon Society supervised work.
"It's beautiful," said Moon Fire Marshal Charlie Belgie, who retired after more than 30 years as chief of the volunteer fire company.
He also spearheaded fundraising and building efforts for the project.
"We have visitors to the Memorial Garden all the time, even when it is not a holiday," he said.
"Many are from out of state. They read the memorials and the bricks on the walkway."
Commemorative bricks are still being sold for the walkway. They can be engraved with the names of people or businesses or milestone dates like anniversaries.
The red bricks are $65 for four 8-inch bricks or $200 for eight 8-inch bricks.
