As local residents lifted shovels to dig out from Friday's storm, children and adults in Beaver County prepared to sit on them for the 2013 Snow Shovel Riding Championship at Old Economy Park.

After a two-year wait because there wasn't enough snow to hold the competition, enthusiasts got their wish with the snow we received Friday and overnight today.

Adults and children have been competitively racing snow shovels in Beaver County since 1963.

Rules are simple: sit or lay on a shovel, and stay on the shovel for the entire run down the 165-foot hill. Each contestant gets two timed runs.

Trophies and prizes are awarded to the first- and second-place finishers in each of seven categories

Registration will begin today at 10 A.M., inside the Maintenance Building across from the barn. Children under 18 will need a parent or guardian to sign the waiver form for their participation.

The event begins at noon and it should be completed by 2:30 P.M., based upon the number of participants.

The Snow Shovel Riding Championship is sponsored by the Beaver County Board of Commissioners and the Recreation and Tourism Department.
