A Beaver County man was being held on $1 million bail today on charges that he assaulted officers, who said they unsuccessfully tried to stun the man with a Taser five times before arresting him.

Deon Durant, 22, of Beaver Falls, faces charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and public drunkenness for an incident that occurred near a Halloween party in the 500 block of Center Street in Rochester Township.

Rochester Township Officer Rick Hacker said police received a call about 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 1 for a report that a man and a woman had been involved in domestic dispute outside the home and witnesses suspected that the man was now inside.

When police arrived, Mr. Durant was in the bedroom. Police pulled Mr. Durant, who they suspect was high on marijuana, ecstasy and a methamphetamine derivative known as Molly, out of a closet and wrestled him to a bed, where police used a Taser on him for the first time, Officer Hacker said.

Mr. Durant ran into an assisting Rochester Borough officer and police used a Taser on him a second, third and fourth time while he ran out of the house. He slipped while trying to run up a hill and an officer attempted to stun him a fifth time before finally cuffing his hands, Officer Hacker said.

Mr. Durant, who is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs at least 260 pounds, was also wanted on a probation violation. He did not have an attorney on file today.

Officer Hacker said a few officers received scraps and bruises during the scuffle but no major injuries were reported. He credited Rochester Borough officers Tony Varillo and Josh Brumm and Sgt. Dawn Shane with assisting with the arrest.
