The Beaver County flag briefly flew over the Washington County courthouse last week.

It was not a mistake -- just the price paid for losing a wager over a high school football championship game.

Washington County commissioners Larry Maggi and Harlan Shober attended the Beaver County commissioners meeting last Thursday to make good on the bet they made on the Nov. 23 WPIAL Class AA championship game at Heinz Field.

The Aliquippa Quips and the Washington Prexies, both undefeated, were facing off. Aliquippa won, 34-7.

Before the players hit the field, elected commissioners from Beaver and Washington counties wagered a food donation and agreed that the losing county would fly the flag of the winner.

Mr. Maggi and Mr. Shober presented a $100 check to the Salvation Army for the organization's food bank in Beaver County and left the courthouse carrying the Beaver County flag.

Their Beaver County counterparts, however, presented them with a food basket for the Washington County food bank.

Gracious in victory, the Beaver County commissioners had decided to help the hungry in Washington County, even though they had won the bet.
