The Whitaker police officer who used his gun to break the window of a motorist, then threatened to file charges unless she paid for the damage to his firearm, has been suspended without pay, according to Whitaker's mayor.

William S. Davis, 35, has surrendered his badge and keys to the borough's police chief and will remain suspended for cause and without pay for 10 business days, according to a statement today from Whitaker Mayor John F. Karichko.

Whitaker Borough Council will consider additional disciplinary action, according to borough officials. Mr. Davis is not allowed to enter the Whitaker police department until his status is resolved.

The Allegheny County district attorney's office, as part of an ongoing investigation, charged Mr. Davis on Oct. 19 with official oppression, making a false statement, criminal mischief and a criminal attempt related to a threat in connection with his June 27 traffic stop of 28-year-old motorist Danielle Stillwell.

Mr. Davis, who said he was looking for a sedan involved in drug activity, stopped Ms. Stillwell as she turned onto Route 837 from the Rankin Bridge, then broke out her driver's side front window after she rolled down the back window instead. Ms. Stillwell told investigators that she drove away from Mr. Davis's first attempt to stop her because he was driving an unmarked car and was wearing street clothes instead of his uniform, and she wasn't certain he was an officer.

Mr. Davis said he was wearing a badge as he approached Ms. Stillwell's car.
