Whitaker mulls status of officer facing charges

The employment status of a part-time Whitaker police officer who has been charged with four misdemeanors in connection with a traffic stop he made in June might be determined this week.
William S. Davis, 35, of Brookline is scheduled to have an informal hearing Wednesday with the borough, after which Mayor John Karichko might make a decision about discipline, Whitaker solicitor George Janocsko said Monday.
Officer Davis is not scheduled to work another shift until Wednesday, police Chief John Vargo said.
The Allegheny County district attorney's office announced Friday that Officer Davis has been charged by summons with criminal mischief, false swearing, official oppression and attempted theft by extortion.
The officer is accused of breaking a woman's window with his gun during a traffic stop and then threatening to file charges if she didn't pay to fix the damaged firearm. He is also charged with writing false information in an affidavit -- a sworn statement.
Officer Davis declined comment.
