What to do on the Fourth in the South suburbs

Here is how some towns in the South Hills are marking our nation's 236th birthday. Most events are on Wednesday, but some pre-activities are planned.

Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair -- A joint fireworks display will be launched at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday from the Port Authority South Hills Trolley Station behind South Hills Village, rain or shine. Details: www.bethelpark.net and www.twpusc.org.

Brentwood -- The borough is celebrating with a host of activities Wednesday beginning with a color ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in Brentwood Stadium. Following at 9 a.m. will be the 29th Annual Brentwood Firecracker 5K Race, which begins at Brentwood Towne Square. At 10 a.m., a fly-over will be held and a holiday parade will step off at Brownsville and Sankey avenues. Following the parade, a car cruise from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. will fill the Get-Go parking lot at Clairton Boulevard and Marylea Avenue. Music by Alter Ego and Allegheny Brass Band will be played from 6:30-9:15 p.m. in Brentwood Stadium followed by awards for the borough's house decorating contest. The colors will be retired at 9:35 p.m. in Brentwood Stadium followed by fireworks at 9:40 p.m. Rain date for fireworks is next Thursday. Details: www.brentwoodboro.com.

Cecil -- Pre-holiday fireworks will be launched at dark Saturday near Holy Rosary Church in Muse. Details: www.ceciltownship-pa.gov.

Dormont -- The borough is celebrating the Fourth in conjunction with its annual community day at Dormont Park on Dormont Avenue. Activities begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday and include bands, bingo, games and food vendors. Fireworks go off at 9:30 p.m. Rain date for the fireworks is next Thursday. Details: www.boro.dormont.pa.us.

Green Tree -- The Green Tree Athletic Association will be host to its annual Fourth of July Co-Ed Adult Softball Game at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hemlock Field. Cost is $120 for a team of up to 12 players. Proceeds benefit Operation Shoebox. Following the game, festivities continue from noon to 3 p.m. at Wilson Park Swimming Pool. Activities include a flag raising, music, games, inflatables, face painting, temporary tattoos, raffles, music by a disc jockey and swimming. Free admission; no pool passes required. Pool closes at 5 p.m.

McKeesport -- The city starts celebrating at noon Wednesday in Kenzie Park. Activities include a concert by Johnny Angel and the Halos followed by fireworks at dusk. Details: www.mckeesport.org.

Mt. Lebanon - Fireworks marking the holiday and the town's ongoing centennial celebration go off at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on Washington Road. The site was changed because of construction at the high school. Washington Road will be closed between Bower Hill Road and Lebanon Avenue from 7 to 11 pm.

The band Airborne takes the stage at Alfred Street and Washington Road at 7:30. There will be food vendors. Earlier in the day, families will enjoy the traditional Community Day at Mt. Lebanon Park. Activities begin at noon with pony rides, inflatables, a petting zoo, games and food. Because the high school parking lot is closed due to construction, a free shuttle will run from the parking lot of Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church, 975 Washington Road, to the park between 11:30 a.m and 5:30. p.m.

Peters -- Pre-holiday fireworks will be launched at 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Peterswood Park. The fireworks will conclude the township's annual community day, which will be held from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Activities throughout the day include Paul's A Train, an airbrush tattoo artist, a strolling bag piper, caricature artist and musical entertainment. Scott -- The township will hold its traditional Fourth fete starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the pool. Activities include water races, contests and girls and boys softball and baseball games at the park's fields. The event also will include a rubber ducky race, raffles and prizes. The pool will close at 6 p.m. and reopen from 7-10 p.m. for the fireworks display at 9:31 p.m. Details: scott-twp.com.

Whitehall -- The Shoppes at Caste Village will host an early Independence Day celebration at noonFriday. Activities include games, food vendors and more with a fireworks display at dusk. Details: www.castevillage.com.
