The Steel Valley school board voted Thursday to appoint Ed Wehrer as the district's new superintendent.

Mr. Wehrer of Munhall, who is executive director of Carnegie Library of Homestead in Munhall and a former Steel Valley football coach, was hired at a special meeting in the high school auditorium attended by about 100 people. Several residents spoke in favor of hiring Mr. Wehrer before the vote.

The audience erupted in cheers and applause after the 5-4 vote.

School directors said Mr. Wehrer was offered a salary of $101,050 without raises for a three-year period beginning on July 25.

He will replace current superintendent William Kinavey, who will retire July 24.
