Three Rivers Quilters assemble show and sale

Visitors to the 30th annual Three Rivers Quilt Show will be able to view at least 130 quilts done in a variety of styles by quilters from the Tristate and beyond.
Organized by Three Rivers Quilters, the show will feature demonstrations of quilting styles, vendors, flea market-style shopping in a venue called "Granny's Attic" and a drawing.
The show runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 21; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 22 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 23 at the IBEW Circuit Center, 5 Hot Metal Street on the South Side. Admission is $7.
"We'll also have a section of around 20 quilts made by children to give them a sense of accomplishment and encourage them to continue quilting," said Nora Hufnagel, publicist and past president.
Another section will show community service quilts that are given away each October to organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House and Angels' Place, a free day care for single parents enrolled in high school or college.
This year, Julie Lesko of Eighty Four is co-chair of the community service project, along with Joy Gallick of Glenshaw.
"Some of our members have donated as many as 20 quilts in one year," Mrs. Lesko said.
At the show, Three Rivers Quilters members and nonmembers alike will vie for cash awards and ribbons in ten different categories that include applique, pieced, art and group-made quilts. The two judges are from the National Quilt Association.
Show judges Linda Luggen of Cincinnati and Sharon Mareska of Toledo will evaluate the quilts March 19 so patrons will be able to see the winners.
Patrons also will have a chance to get into the act by voting for a People's Choice winner. The quilt show board will select one for its Director's Choice award.
Shawn Quinlan of Pittsburgh plans to enter three of his quilts, including one made in tribute to his grandfather. After the show, "Visiting Gramp's Memories" will go to Ireland to be entered in an all-male quilters festival.
With about 80 members, the guild usually meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month at Baldwin Community United Methodist Church, Baptist and Weyman roads, Whitehall. The meetings often feature a workshop.
Three Rivers Quilters is a nonprofit dedicated to sharing information and developing skills in quilting and textile arts.
