Public schools receive state grants
The state Education Department has awarded $479,513 to 37 public schools through the Safe Schools Targeted Grant to establish programs to prevent and reduce incidents of violence.
Local winners include Keystone Oaks, McKeesport and Fort Cherry school districts and Washington Intermediate Unit.
Education Secretary Ron Tomalis. in making the announcement last week, said the funds "will provide resources for schools to put programs into place that will enhance safety in our schools."
Schools were eligible to receive up to $15,000.
Keystone Oaks will receive $13,500; McKeesport Area, $15,000; Fort Cherry, $14,658; and Intermediate Unit No. 1, Washington County, $12,000.
CASTLE SHANNON
'Purse and Cash Bash' fundraiser set
Outreach Teen & Family Services will hold a Ladies' Night Out Purse and Cash Bash fundraiser at 6 p.m. Jan. 25 at Castle Shannon Fire Hall.
Snow date will be Feb. 1.
The $35 ticket includes a light meal, an open bar and a chance to win prizes.

GREENE COUNTY
All-night skate rings in New Year
Greene County Department of Recreation will ring in the New Year with the fifth annual All Night Skate, beginning at 10 p.m. Monday at Mon View Roller Rink in Greensboro.
The skate will last until 6 a.m. Tuesday and is intended for those 17 and younger. Admission is $10.
Parents dropping off skaters must sign consent forms; those younger than 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

• Applications are available for the 23rd annual Miss Greene County Pageant, scheduled for 2 p.m. March 3 in the Stanley Ferek III Auditorium of Carmichaels Area High School.
The pageant is open to Greene County girls ages 2 to 17 in a variety of age categories.
To qualify, each contestant must submit an application and head shots and meet sponsorship guidelines. Deadline for submission is Jan. 22 at the Department of Recreation, 107 Fairgrounds Road, Waynesburg.

ROSTRAVER
Rotarians plan oldies dance for charity
The Belle Vernon Area and Monessen/Rostraver Rotary clubs will present the annual benefit Oldies dance at 8 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Rostraver Central Fire Hall.
Proceeds are used to benefit a variety of charitable causes; locally scholarships are given to seniors at Belle Vernon Area and Frazier high schools; international projects include Polio Plus, the rotary project to eradicate the disease.
Admission to the BYOB affair is $15 including soft drinks and snacks.
Disc jockey is Ralph Trilli, co-host of the "Cruisin' Sunday Oldies" show on radio station WJPA (93.5 FM, 1450 AM) in Washington.

SOUTH FAYETTE
Garbage fee on hold
Commissioners, during a meeting earlier this month, tabled their decision until January on a proposed garbage fee. The most recent proposal was to charge $8 a month per household to help pave roads, purchase equipment and make other capital improvements.
