Chamber looking for new members

The South Hills Chamber of Commerce is looking for new members, said director Connie Ruhl. Two programs are planned to encourage applications.

On Feb. 27, the chamber will be implementing a new marketing program called LEAP Into a New World of Marketing.

Details will be unveiled at the organization's After Hours ConneXions Networking session from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Andora's Restaurant. Admission is $5 and includes appetizers.

The chamber will hold its monthly luncheon at 11:30 a.m. March 13 at Andora's with Karen Mokwa, from Pittsburgh South Express as guest speaker. Her topic is "Generations in the Workplace."

Cost is $20. Reservations due March 11.

CALIFORNIA

Panel discusses impact of sports

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch, sports columnist Kevin Blackistone of ESPN's "Around the Horn," and coach Robert Wimbley of Liberty University will visit California University of Pennsylvania to discuss the impact of sports on the lives of African-Americans.

The free panel presentation at 11 a.m. Feb. 21 in Steele Hall Mainstage Theater is part of the university's celebration of Black History Month.

Mr. Batch, a native of Homestead, has played for 12 years in the National Football League. His eight seasons with the Steelers include playing with the Super Bowl XL and XLIII teams; he currently is the team's NFL Players Association representative.

Mr. Batch is a philanthropist whose nonprofit Best of the Batch Foundation serves underprivileged youth in the greater Pittsburgh area.

He also is owner and president of Batch Development Co., which manages properties and develops businesses.

Mr. Blackistone, a veteran reporter and sports columnist, holds the Shirley Povich Chair in Sports Journalism at the University of Maryland and appears as a regular panelist on ESPN's "Around the Horn" talks show. He is an occasional contributor to National Public Radio and a co-author of "A Gift for Ron," a memoir by former NFL player Everson Walls, who donated a kidney to a former teammate.

Mr. Wimbley has spent four seasons as a senior defensive coach at Liberty University in Virginia.

Town icon Perry Como to be remembered

Plans are being made for Hot Diggity Dog Days to mark the 100th birthday of hometown legend, singer Perry Como.

The celebration will be May 18 and 19 in the downtown and there will be events with names linked to the singer's hit tunes.

For example: the "Dream Along with Me Sock Hop" and an "It's Impossible" scavenger hunt. Times for these events have yet to be set.

Hot Diggity banners will be spread throughout the town.

The Greater Canonsburg Heritage Society is hosting a luncheon May 18 at Southpointe.

CLAIRTON

Sale of sewer lines to be discussed

Clairton and its Municipal Authority will hold a joint informational presentation at 6 p.m. Feb. 14 in council chambers, 551 Ravensburg Blvd., on the impact of the proposed sale of the city's storm and sanitary sewer lines and sewage treatment pump stations to the authority.

The state Department of Environmental Protection mandated sanitary sewer repairs and expansion of the sewage treatment plant that is operated by the authority.

SOUTH FAYETTE

Foundation holds fundraiser for district

The South Fayette Foundation for Excellence will hold its second Evening with The Mansfield 5 and The Four Townsmen at 7 p.m. March 3 at the SNPJ Club, 540 Third Ave., Bridgeville. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $20.

This fundraiser will aid the nonprofit foundation in developing financial resources for the district, which includes teacher grants for innovative programs and staff development, scholarships for student achievement and additional instructional supplies, technology and equipment.

Food, snacks and beverages will be available for purchase. There will also be a basket auction and raffle. Last year's event sold out. Call 724-693-9441 for tickets.

WASHINGTON COUNTY

Ellsworth VFD gets Homeland grant

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has awarded $825,280 to fire departments in a number of counties in the state, including Washington, through the Assistance to Firefighters federal grant program.

Ellsworth Volunteer Fire Company received $332,500 for vehicle acquisition.

These competitive grants are awarded to fire departments and nonaffiliated Emergency Medical Service organizations to help first responders to protect the health and safety of the public and that of first-responders.

Since 2001, $5 billion in grants has been given to first-responder organizations for emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles and training.
