Steel Valley School Board discusses disparities between elementary schools

At Tuesday night's Steel Valley School Board meeting, Paula Sculimbrene, the mother of an elementary-age boy, complained about differences between Park and Barrett elementary schools in how much material has been covered this year.
She said after her son was transferred to Barrett, she discovered the kids there were at least four weeks behind those at Park Elementary. Ms. Sculimbrene said when she asked about the disparity, she was told that teachers aren't able to teach the material as fast at Barrett because of behavioral problems, she said.
"What are your plans for remediation?" she asked the school board.
School director Mike Terrick said directors are "painfully aware" of the disparity between the two schools.
"That is why Barrett Elementary is on the (PSSA low achieving) list." he said.
"We're going to give them a chance to pick that end of the district up," he said Tuesday.
At the beginning of the meeting, Superintendent Ed Wehrer said education committee members had attended a "very positive" meeting earlier.
"We're going to come up with a plan of how we're going to improve our (test scores) in Steel Valley," he said.
