CHILDREN

Whitehall -- Local comic book author Carol Vicini and her white boxer Steel Dog will visit Whitehall Public Library, 100 Borough Park Drive, at 7 p.m. Monday to present "The Adventures of Steel Dog," a comic book series. No registration required.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Dormont -- The annual South Hills Public Safety Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dormont Pool parking lot at Dormont Avenue and McFarland Road. Fire and rescue equipment and apparatus will be on display.

Scott -- The Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh-South Hills will hold its annual fall family open house, with free activities for the community, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at 345 Kane Blvd.

FOOD

Bethel Park -- An all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. next Thursday at Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Road. Cost: $6 for adults, $3 for those younger than 12, free for younger than 3; $18 maximum.

South Side -- A food fair, flea market and bake sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 13 and from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 14 at St. John the Baptist Church, 109 S. Seventh St.

Whitehall -- Haluski and homemade soup, including wedding and acorn squash soup, can be purchased and picked up between 3 and 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Sisters' Motherhouse, 3603 McRoberts Road. Orders must be placed by today. To order: 412-885-7232.

Munhall -- An annual fall roast beef dinner and bake sale will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Anne Ashley United Methodist Church fellowship hall, 334 22nd Ave. Cost: $9 for adults, $5 for children younger than 12. FUNDRAISERS

Bethel Park -- The Bethel Park Lions, wearing orange vests, will accept donations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at South Park Shops. Proceeds benefit leader dogs and charities for those who are blind or vision-impaired.

McKeesport -- An oldies dance will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 14 at the McKeesport Palisades, 501 Water St. Donations will be taken to raise funds for a reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the death of Port Vue resident Ronnie Long.

HOLIDAY EVENTS

South Park -- The South Park Lions Club will sponsor its annual Halloween parade at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 28. The route starts at the parking lot of David J. Henney Funeral Home, 6364 Library Road, continues along Route 88 toward Finleyville, onto Brownsville Road and left onto Pleasant Street.

MEETINGS

Bethel Park -- Southwestern Pennsylvania Registered Nurses Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 16 at Hamilton Presbyterian Church, 4500 Baptist Road. A speaker will talk about treating cancer. All registered nurses welcome.

Brentwood -- Teens are invited to visit the Brentwood Public Library, 3501 Brownsville Road, at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday to talk about books, music and movies and get a free snack.

OUTDOORS

Bethel Park -- Friends of the Montour Trail in Bethel Park and in South Park, Jefferson Hills and Clairton will conduct an Oct. 13 fundraiser for trail maintenance. Trail users are asked to bring pennies or other donations to collection spots at the Irishtown trail head, Limestone trail head or access road to Washington Road off Clifton Road. In case of inclement weather, donations may be brought from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to the access road to Washington School in Bethel Park and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to the Bethel Park-South Park Waste Water Treatment Plant parking lot, to Gill Hall Road in Jefferson Hills, or to the Clairton Trailhead.

Jefferson Hills -- A fall festival will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 13 at Jefferson Hills Municipal Building, 925 Old Clairton Road.

Pleasant Hills -- The public library is sponsoring an owl prowl at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Pleasant Hills Arboretum, West Bruceton Road. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars to follow local ornithologist Bob Mulvihill as he looks for owls.

PETS

Upper St. Clair -- People-friendly pets and their owners are invited to participate in the blessing of the pets at 2 p.m. Sunday in the south parking lot of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Road. Keep pets on leashes or in carriers, and bring proof of up-to-date vaccinations. If weather is inclement, the event will be held in the church gymnasium.

Whitehall -- The St. Francis Academy Alumnae Association is sponsoring a blessing of the animals at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Francis Academy, 3603 McRoberts Road.

SALES

Pleasant Hills -- St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church will hold its annual fall flea market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the parish gym, One Grove Place.

Whitehall -- The Whitehall Public Library will hold a book sale today through Sunday in the Whitehall Borough Building community room, 100 Borough Park Drive. Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Whitehall -- The Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God will hold its Ladies Night Out fall vendor show, a night of shopping, starting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the motherhouse at 3603 McRoberts Road. The event is free, but space is limited. To attend, call 412-885-7232 by Wednesday.

Collier -- Holy Child Parish Christian Mothers & Guild will hold its 50th annual luncheon, fashion show and ticket auction at 11 a.m. Oct. 21 at Peters Place, 1199 Washington Pike.
