The new chief recovery officer of the Duquesne School District has been granted an extension to Jan. 31 to develop a financial recovery plan for the district.

State education secretary Ron Tomalis granted the extension to Paul Long, whom he named chief recovery officer on Nov. 16.

Without the extension, Mr. Long had 30 days to create an advisory committee, hold four public meetings and compose a financial recovery plan.

An email from Mr. Long Friday indicated an advisory committee has been formed and the schedule for the public forums will be released soon.

The action in Duquesne is the result of state financial recovery legislation. Three other school districts -- Chester Upland, Harrisburg and York -- also fall under the legislation.
