Some past programs have included a presentation by a geologist on the paleontology and early history of the area, discussions about Winston Churchill, music by the Thomas Jefferson High School jazz band, and a talk by then-U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.

"We try to have an interesting program.

"It's something additional to do besides cutting grass and keeping house," explained Jack Holohan, leader of the Retired Men's Luncheon Group of Pleasant Hills.

The nonprofit group meets for lunch and entertainment at noon the third Thursday of every month in the Fellowship Hall of the Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church, Old Clairton Road and Audrey Drive.

The next gathering will be today and features a discussion of ways to maintain a financially comfortable retirement.

The speaker will be certified public accountant and tax attorney James Lange.

Mr. Holohan, 72, of Pleasant Hills, said the 40-year-old organization evolved from informal social gatherings of South Hills retirees.

Today, there are about 100 retirees on the monthly call list that informs members of the next program. About 50 to 70 members attend a luncheon.

There are no membership fees.

"It's a fun time with a bunch of great guys. You see the name tag and say, 'I remember you from years ago,' and reminisce," said board member Ralph Saltzman, 79, of Whitehall.

Bob Olsen, 82, of Pleasant Hills, ran the organization for 17 years, beginning in 1991.

"My biggest struggle was getting a free program every month," he said.

The church donates use of the building, while the luncheon fee -- $3.50 in 1991 -- for the sandwich buffet and printed program covers the cost of the catered meal.

Otherwise, nothing much has changed with the group, said Mr. Holohan, except what time itself changes.

"We serve the same menu we have had for 40 years," said Mr. Holohan, "but it costs more today."

Cost of the lunch is $6, free for newcomers, and anyone may attend.

Reservations are required by calling 412-655-2000, ext.128.
