North Braddock man who 'spent a lot of his adult life in jail' sentenced in heroin case

A North Braddock man with an extensive criminal history was sentenced today to two years in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute heroin.
Monty L. Grinage, 34, recently completed a 10-year federal sentence for possession with intent to sell crack cocaine and could face an additional penalty for violating probation on that case by selling heroin.
Before that sentence began, he had numerous state court convictions for drugs, disorderly conduct and fraud.
"He's spent a lot of his adult life in jail," his attorney, Ronald Hayward, said. "Enough is enough for Monty."
His client is "determined to get out of this lifestyle," Mr. Hayward said.
"Frankly, the defendant has led a criminal lifestyle for his entire adult life," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan Conway. "The risk of recidivism here couldn't be more stark."
Mr. Conway said he was surprised that federal sentencing guidelines put the suggested prison term at just 21 to 27 months.
U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon set the sentence in the middle of that range.
