Mt. Lebanon teacher charged with sexting former student

A Mt. Lebanon High School choir director accused of sexting a student for years surrendered to police this morning.
Jason W. Greenawalt, 33, was arraigned and taken to the Allegheny County Jail with bond set at $20,000. He has been charged with corruption of a minor, unlawful contact with a minor and criminal use of a communication facility.
A male student, who has since graduated, told police he received sexually explicit messages from Mr. Greenawalt while at school and at home starting in November 2010, Mt. Lebanon police wrote in a criminal complaint.
The exchanges were via text and GrindR, a social networking app for gay men.
The former student said he first became friends with Mr. Greenawalt because both were involved in the school marching band.
The former student told police Mr. Greenawalt would ask him to send pictures, but he declined. Mr. Greenawalt once sent the former student an image of himself in a bathing suit, according to the complaint.
The two never had sex, although Mr. Greenawalt would sometimes touch the former student's stomach with the back of his hand at school, according to the complaint.
He told police he "entertained the sexual conversations with Greenawalt over a three-year period because he felt manipulated and trapped by Greenawalt," the complaint said.
Mr. Greenawalt began teaching at the high school in 2004 and has been musical director for the annual spring musical. He also supervised choral activities and was band auxiliary sponsor.
