Mt. Lebanon landlord pleads guilty to tax charges

A landlord whose apartment buildings throughout Allegheny County have been the subject of numerous complaints over the years has pleaded guilty to federal tax charges.
Jason Cohen of Mt. Lebanon, owner and president of Trends Capital, waived indictment by grand jury Wednesday and pleaded to one count of filing false returns before U.S. District Judge Mark Hornak.
Federal prosecutors and the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS said Mr. Cohen falsified his income tax returns for 2006 through 2008 by failing to declare $283,000 in monthly rental fees his tenants paid in cash.
The tax loss to the government was $24,368 for the three years, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
Mr. Cohen was charged directly by information last month and quickly agreed to a plea.
He will be sentenced Dec. 12 and remains free on bond until then. Judge Hornak ordered him to surrender his passport.
