State police are trying to identify a man whose body was found in the Monongahela River in Fayette County on Thursday.

Police said Friday that the body, which was discovered by two people fishing in the Mon, appeared to have been swept there by the natural flow of the river and no evidence was found at the scene.

Police departments near where the body was found -- three miles north of Point Marion in Springhill, Fayette County, near the West Virginia border -- were contacted about missing persons reports. State police say there are several leads being investigated.

An autopsy and check of dental records are needed to identify the man.

Police said the body appeared to have been in the water for a long time because it had decomposed substantially.
