An Animal Friends humane officer is investigating the possible poisoning of five dogs in McKeesport, one of which was euthanized.

Animal Friends spokeswoman Jolene Miklas said the dogs fell ill around Memorial Day weekend and were diagnosed with liver and kidney issues consistent with poisoning, though they are still awaiting toxicology tests for confirmation.

After the dogs' owners, who all live within a five-block area, conferred with each other, they contacted Animal Friends, which sent its humane officer to investigate.

"It's just too coincidental that all of these dogs are getting sick in the same way," Ms. Miklas said.

The surviving four dogs are in critical condition and at least one is on dialysis, she said.

The group is offering a $1,500 reward leading to an arrest and conviction in connection with the poisonings if the animals are found to have been poisoned.

Ms. Miklas asked anyone with information to call the humane officer at 412-847-7066.
