A Girl Scout troop leader in Belle Vernon has been charged with stealing money from her troop.

The Southwest Regional Police Department announced today that Ellen Amoroso, 46, has been charged with stealing $1,820 of proceeds from girl scout cookie sales from her troop.

When the Girls Scouts of Western Pennsylvania realized the money was missing, they brought a complaint to police on July 10. Ms. Amoroso then confessed that she had spent the money on personal uses such as utility and cell phone bills, said Southwest Regional Police Chief John Hartman.

"The act in and of itself is unconscionable," Chief Hartman said. "First of all clearly stealing is a crime. Second of all to misapproroate finds from a nonprofit organization like this is inexcusable."

Ms. Amoroso had only been the leader since November.

"I give the Girl Scouts kudos for coming to the police," Chief Hartman said.
