Dumping site issues resolved in Steel Valley

Steel Valley School District solicitor Donald Fetzko says a problem with illegal dumping on the former Woodlawn Middle School site has been resolved.
In June, Bill Rogers of R&B Contracting and Excavation Inc. of West Homestead said he removed one truckload of debris from the dump site, including refrigerators, microwave ovens, shingles, other building refuse, shrubs and trees torn out by landscapers, as requested by school director Joe Ducar.
Mr. Rogers said he piled dirt and bricks on the level land at the top of the hillside to prevent further dumping over the hill. In June, Mr. Rogers said he had not dumped building materials into the valley over the sewer lines.
On Tuesday, John Poister of the state Department of Environmental Protection Pittsburgh office said inspectors decided not to cite Mr. Rogers for dumping at the site, in exchange for his agreement to remove materials he placed there, as well as materials other people had dumped.
School director Mike Terrick said materials had been removed in the previous 60 days at a September board meeting.
Mr. Poister said inspectors will go to the site in the next two weeks to make sure debris was removed to DEP's satisfaction. He said officials also will ask the district to build a fence at the top of the slope to prevent dumping.
