Developer of Save-A-Lot in Clairton pulls out

A developer trying to bring a Save-A-Lot grocery story to Clairton has told the city it no longer is pursuing the project and has withdrawn applications for private bank loans, Mayor Richard Lattanzi said today.
He described as "disappointing" the letter received this week from Sierra Development, LLC but said the city will press on to provide its 6,800 residents something they have lacked since the IGA in their community closed eight years ago.
If another developer does not come forward, Mr. Lattanzi said, the city will try to find one. "We're not going to stop," he said.
Sierra had hoped to open the store on the former Blair Heights housing project site off Maple Avenue, roughly 100 yards from Route 837, the mayor said. The city and Allegheny County cobbled together aid covering half the $3 million project cost, but when a consultant for Sierra sought $460,000 more last month, the city said it did not believe it could come up with the funds, he added.
A representative of Sierra could not immediately be reached today for comment on the firm's decision.
Mr. Lattanzi said Sierra "gave it a good try" but may have been unable to make the project work financially. Save-A-Lot agreed to provide $625,000 to supply the store, but only if it was finished by February 2014, the mayor said.
The mayor said Sierra wanted to finish the store by September. He said the letter delivered to the city Wednesday did not specify why the store was no longer being pursued.
