The West Homestead Volunteer Fire Department is hosting the Allegheny County Volunteer Firefighters Association's annual convention this week.

Association president Dave Harhai said the event will culminate with a community day of live entertainment, food booths and a dunk tank from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Homestead firehouse, 447 W. Eighth Ave. A short parade down West Eighth Avenue begins at 4 p.m.

Radio station 96.9 BOB FM will host a show live from the event from 4 to 6 p.m.

Starting at 10 a.m. Friday, the association is sponsoring a golf outing at the Westwood Golf Club in West Mifflin. Registration for the event concluded Monday.

An annual meeting will be held at the firehouse at 7 p.m. Friday, where new officers will be elected and heroism and firefighter of the year honors will be awarded. A live band will perform at 8 p.m.

The convention kicked off Sunday with a memorial service at the St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, 363 W. 11th Ave., Homestead, for members who died in the past year. The convention also included a "battle of the barrels" fun competition between departments Tuesday and Wednesday.

Proceeds from the convention will benefit the West Homestead Volunteer Fire Department.

The association, which is celebrating its 98th year, represents more than 200 volunteer fire departments in Allegheny County with support for training, grant writing and legislative initiatives.
