Three-year-old twins died when a fire burned one North Braddock home and then spread to another this afternoon.

An emergency dispatch supervisor said the fire near the intersection of Rebecca Avenue and Thirteenth Street was first reported about 3:30 p.m. when a passerby spotted smoke and called 911.

Family members identified the twins as Ky-hier and Dy-hier Arthur and said they heard that the boys' mother left them unattended for a few moments while she went to find another child.

Alvin Henderson, chief of Allegheny County emergency services, said a local contractor spotted smoke and tried to knock on the door. When no one answered, he called 911.

When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames. They entered and attempted to do a search and rescue but eventually had to pull back and focus on fighting the fire from the outside, Chief Henderson said.

Firefighters found one of the boys on the first floor of the home, where investigators suspect the blaze began, and another on the second floor.

Chief Henderson said it was too early to tell how the fire began. He said investigators were also trying to learn who, if anyone, was at home with the children at the time.

Allegheny County homicide detectives are investigating.
