Cheerleaders to collect coats
Cheerleaders from the North Hills and North Allegheny school districts will collect coats Friday during the sixth annual Unite on Game Night coat drive.
The collection will take place at the game between the two schools, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in North Allegheny's Newman Stadium at the high school, 10375 Perry Highway, McCandless.
Clean, slightly worn coats of all sizes will be collected at the ticket booth to benefit the free coat shop at North Hills Community Outreach.
Coats also can be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Friday at the North Hills athletics and activities office in North Hills High School, 55 Rochester Road, Ross.
The cheerleaders have collected more than 3,000 coats in the past five years from the North Hills and North Allegheny school communities.
North Allegheny slow-pitch girls softball players also are collecting coats and canned food.
Straw available to keep pets warm
Animal Friends is offering free bags of straw to shelter pets that stay outdoors or to shelter feral cats during cold weather.
Blankets, towels and pillows hold moisture and will freeze during winter, so straw is the best insulation against cold and dampness.
Free bags of straw can be picked up at the nonprofit animal shelter, 562 Camp Horne Road. Straw delivery is available for those who do not have transportation or who are unable to pick up the straw.
For those who care for feral cats, Animal Friends is selling a limited supply of winter shelters for feral cats. The houses are $5 each and are available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the shelter.
Animal Friends recommends that pets be kept inside, but for those who house pets outdoors, the shelter offers these tips during the winter:
• Use a car mat or rug as a flap over a doghouse door. If you need a dog house, contact Animal Friends to inquire about availability.
• Provide unfrozen water in a nonmetallic bowl and extra food during cold weather.
• Frequently check a pet's paws, ears and tail for signs of frostbite. If frostbite is suspected, take the animal to a veterinarian immediately.
• Make sure a dog's chain is not frozen to the ground or tangled.
• Be aware that salt and other snow-melting chemicals can injure an animal's paw pads.

Salvation Army needs bell ringers
The Salvation Army needs volunteers to ring bells Fridays and Saturdays in December for its Christmas kettle fundraising drive at the Walmart off Route 8 in Richland.
Members of the Boy Scouts Gibsonia Troop will ring bells Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
Volunteers are needed to ring bells from noon to 8 p.m. on these Fridays: Dec. 7, 14 and 21. They are needed from noon to 6 p.m. on these Saturdays: Dec. 8, 15 and 22.

Halloween show, tour at nonprofit theater
Enchante Cabaret, a professional touring company, will perform "Witches Brew," a family-friendly production that includes Broadway and pop music, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at The Strand Theater, 119 N. Main St.
Cost: $15-$20 for reserved adult seats, $10-$15 for younger than 12. Tickets: 724-742-0400.
The production is part of the nonprofit theater's Northern Nightmares program, which includes the Nightmare Tour, a 45-minute bus tour of places in Zelienople and Harmony that are said to be haunted.
Tours depart at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Pickup is in the parking lot next to Goodfello's restaurant at Main Street and Grandview Avenue, Zelienople.
