Weekend festivals
After moving from the North Side to Browns Lane, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church learned from the first two festivals held in their temporary location that too much food is not enough.
"We've made 500 pounds more of shish kabob, spanikopita and pastitsio," said parish council President Chris T. Balouris of McCandless. "We've really ramped it up."
Other menu items include ethnic favorites like Gyros, Greek fries and flaky pastries and stuffed grape leaves.
Holy Trinity's Fall Festival will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
"The last festival we held [in May] was our most successful festival ever," he said, noting that proceeds from the festival go to church operating costs and help pay for the church's new building, which is under construction on Babcock Boulevard and Cumberland Road. With the opening of Holy Trinity's $8 million church scheduled for June, Mr. Balouris said there's a 50/50 chance that the next festival could be held there.
"Either way, we look forward to sharing the Greek culture with our neighbors this weekend."
• Sewickley's first ever Oktoberfest will feature Bavarian music, beer, German food and activities from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, Gaudi Buam will play from 6 to 9 p.m., and Conrad Ostertag will perform from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, followed by the Continental Dukes from 8:15 to 10:30. The Sharp Edge Bistro will provide Spaten Oktoberfest and Spaten Lager, served in traditional litre glasses and steins. German Riesling will also be served.
The bistro will offer a variety of German foods, including bratwurst, knockwurst and pulled pork sandwiches.
A Das Dachshund Dash, a 10-yard race, starts at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. There also will be a beer stein holding contest, a pretzel toss, a yodeling contest and a German costume challenge. Proceeds will benefit Village Green Partners, which is committed to revitalizing the business district.
Performance about teen dating violence
Everything Is Fine, a Prime Stage Theatre play about teen dating violence will be presented at 7:30 tonight in the Hillman Center for Performing Arts on the Shady Side Academy Senior School campus, 423 Fox Chapel Road, Fox Chapel.
The 45-minute play is written and performed by teens to raise awareness about abusive teen relationships. A discussion will be held after the play.
