Former state Superior Court Judge Michael T. Joyce of Erie was officially disbarred by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court last week.

The order, which was issued on June 14, comes more than three years after he was sentenced for insurance fraud in March 2009 and then suspended from practicing law.

Testimony in his trial showed Joyce golfing, scuba diving and using in-line skates after claiming that neck injuries sustained in a slow-speed crash severely altered his life.

He was sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison and ordered to pay $440,000 in restitution.

Court records indicate that he will be released from a half-way house in Pittsburgh on Aug. 30.
