A Slippery Rock University football player leaped to his death Wednesday afternoon from a bridge in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Derek Durand, 20, of Sarver, was pronounced dead at the scene under Buffalo Creek Bridge in Buffalo, a part of Route 28 that spans Buffalo Creek, Cpl. Joseph Murphy said.

Mr. Durand, a wide receiver, was a rising sophomore, according to a posting on Slippery Rock University's website.

The corporal said a passerby watched Mr. Durand leap over the bridge's railing about 1:25 p.m.
