The Slippery Rock University Council of Trustees has named vice president for administration and finance Charles Curry to serve as acting president after President Robert Smith retires Feb. 10.

Slippery Rock trustees are in the midst of a national search and hope to have a new president by summer. The board is considering six candidates, the first of whom is to be interviewed today.

Mr. Curry has been at Slippery Rock since 1986, when he became assistant vice president for finance. He was promoted to his current position 18 months later.

About a week ago, the board of governors of the State System of Higher Education conferred emeritus status on Mr. Smith, who has been president since May 2004. Mr. Smith was first hired by Slippery Rock in 1999 as provost and vice president for academic affairs. He served as interim president for 18 months before being named president.
