Slippery Rock U. lawsuit settled with athletic officials

A lawsuit against Slippery Rock University by two female athletic officials has been settled, according to stipulations filed late Tuesday in U.S. District Court.
The lawsuit was filed in June by Assistant Athletic Director Pearl Shaffer and volleyball Coach Laurie Lokash. They claimed that they were victims of retaliation after they spoke against Athletic Director Paul Lueken.
The lawsuit followed one filed in 2006, and later settled, in which 12 female student-athletes and another coach, represented by the Women's Law Project, sued the university for violating Title IX. That law requires equal opportunity for women's sports in colleges and universities receiving federal funding.
Ms. Lokash sought a reversal of what she said was a decision by Mr. Lueken to push her into retirement, and her contract has since been renewed. Ms. Shaffer had asked for a change in the chain of command so she did not have to report to Mr. Lueken, and in October she was made the associate director of alumni engagement.
The plaintiffs' attorneys declined to say how much the two will get in monetary damages, and university spokespersons had no information.
