Shaler Township commissioners set a public hearing for July at their regular meeting on Tuesday, June 12.

The hearing, set for 7 p.m. on July 10, is for public comment on pension plan contribution rates for both union and non-union employees of the township. The commissioners plan to leave these rates unchanged at 5 percent of pay for each employee.

By state law, Shaler must now have its on municipal appeals board, something the township used to share with a number of North Hills communities. The commissioners are now seeking residents with engineering degrees to join the board.

According to Tim Rogers, township manager, the new board probably will meet only once a year. In the last five years, Shaler has had only one code enforcement appeal. Those interested in joining the municipal appeals board can contact the township office at 412-486-9700.
