Seneca Valley marching band seeking bids for new uniforms

The Seneca Valley marching band will be wearing new uniforms this fall.
School board members today gave band directors Varden Armstrong and Bob Matchett approval to seek bids for 250 new uniforms. School administrators have previously estimated that new band uniforms could cost more than $100,000.
Mr. Armstrong said the Seneca Valley Band Boosters have agreed to pay $5,000 per year for up to three years toward the cost of the new uniforms. The Seneca Valley Band Foundation has also pledged $3,000 per year for three years, he said. And the nonprofit arm of the district, the Seneca Valley Foundation, is donating $3,000 for the uniforms, according to administrators.
Mr. Matchett said the current uniforms were purchased 13 years ago.
"The material is not repairable anymore. The seams and roping are brittle. For the past two years, students have been wearing improperly fitting uniforms," he said.
Mr. Armstrong said they have been consulting three uniform companies to come up with the specifications for the new uniforms.
"It's going to be unique to Seneca Valley. It won't be a stock design," he said. Mr. Armstrong added they are also looking for quality so they can get at least 10 years out of the new uniforms.
The band directors said they hope to have the bids back by February and the new uniforms ordered in March.
