School property rezoned in Ross

Ross commissioners Monday voted to rezone the former Northway Elementary School property on Brown Lane from residential to commercial so it can become part of the development planned for the Shoppes at Northway.
The rezoning was approved 5-2 with Dan DeMarco, Peter Ferraro, Gerald O'Brien, John Sponcer and Grace Stanko supporting the change and Chris Eyster and commission Chairman Grant Montgomery voting no. Lana Mazur and David Mikec were absent.
Resident Robert Fenk told commissioners that he did not want his backyard abutting a mall, and he would move if the rezoning was approved. Three other residents also spoke against the rezoning. Allegheny County Councilman Matt Drozd, who represents Ross, told commissioners that he favors economic development in the township.
Levey and Co., an Akron, Ohio-based developer, purchased the former Northway Mall and the adjacent school with plans to convert the site into retail and office space.
In other action, commissioners voted 7-0 to rezone a parcel on Cemetery Lane from neighborhood commercial to multifamily residential. Townhouses are planned for the site, said township manager Doug Sample.
They also named Debby Grass, who served as interim manager, as interim finance director. The township will advertise for a full-time finance director, Mr. Sample said.
Commissioners also voted to pay Gateway Engineers $8,500 for a feasibility study on the public works garage. The second floor of the garage is deteriorated, and is being temporarily shored up. The study will look at rehabilitating the building, constructing a new one or changing the second floor to light storage and building a smaller garage adjacent to the building to park the trucks.
