When the clerk at the Pit Stop Express shop in Bellevue refused to comply this morning with a robber's demands to give him the money from the cash register drawer, the thief manhandled the clerk then made off with the cash register itself.

"It's the first time anything like this has ever happened," said Chris Jaquay of Imperial, the store manager.

The clerk, who did not want to be identified or interviewed, is "a little shook up," but is not injured, Mr. Jaquay said. "The guy grabbed him by the throat and pushed him around but he's okay," he commented.

The incident began at about 2 a.m. when the man entered the store on Ohio River Boulevard. He began to check out, purchasing a pack of cigarettes, when he told the clerk that he forgot his money. "When he came back in, he grabbed my cashier and demanded money," Mr. Jaquay said. The clerk refused to turn over any cash. The robber then "ripped the register away and took off," Mr. Jaquay said.

Police are investigating.
