Realty Co. plans to revitalize former Northway Mall

LRC Realty Co. plans to revitalize the Shoppes at Northway, formerly Northway Mall, with a mix of retail, office and restaurant space.
Representatives of the Ohio-based company held an information meeting Wednesday in the mall's second-floor common area. The company closed on the mall property Nov. 29, and had previously purchased the adjacent former Northway Elementary School from the North Hills School District.
The school property will be part of the redevelopment of the mall, said Gary O'Nesti, special projects director for LRC. The first step is to have that property rezoned from residential to commercial. The Ross planning commission will consider the rezoning at its Dec. 20 meeting.
More than 250 people -- most of them residents of adjacent neighborhoods and senior citizen apartments -- attended the meeting, voicing concerns about potential traffic problems.
Northway was built in 1953 as a strip shopping center, and was converted to the area's first indoor mall in 1962.
LRC also purchased the former McCracken Ford property and redeveloped another vacant property on McKnight Road into retail space now occupied by Auto Zone and Dollar Tree stores.
