North Hills Community Outreach has won this year's Award for Management Excellence, administered by The Forbes Funds. The $10,000 award is made to a local nonprofit human service or community development organization that demonstrates a commitment to excellence in management.
Diana Bucco, president of The Forbes Funds, said the community outreach was chosen from a "highly competitive" field of 20 nonprofits. The other two finalists were The Children's Institute and United Cerebral Palsy/CLASS.
"NHCO was chosen, in part, because it has demonstrated the core assessment of 'say what you do, do as you say,'" Ms. Bucco said.
Nominees were judged on their commitment to outstanding management in the following areas: leadership among the staff and board of directors, use of information and objective analysis in planning and programming, commitment to excellence in human resource management and consumer satisfaction, continuous improvement of service delivery processes, measurement and monitoring of outcomes, openness to collaborative efforts with other organizations, and accountability to the public trust.
The award is named for Alfred W. Wishart Jr., who served as president of the Pittsburgh Foundation for 31 years and was chairman of The Forbes Funds when it began. It carries a $10,000 cash grant to be used for management support purposes.
North Hills Community Outreach's executive director Fay Morgan said, "We are humbled and honored by this wonderful award. The $10,000 prize that accompanies it will go a long way to ensuring that no one in our community is cold, hungry or alone."
Community Outreach provides services including two food pantries, emergency financial assistance, utility help, employment services, Family Savings Accounts, Community Auto low-income vehicle membership program and others.
