• Six North Hills Senior High School students were recently selected for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 1 honors orchestra and honors choir.
Honors choir members are junior Torey Gricks and sophomore Michael O'Brien. Both will be singing Tenor I. They will rehearse and perform under the direction of Paul Head, of the University of Delaware. Performance will be on Oct. 24 at Upper St. Clair High School.
Honors orchestra members are seniors Lauretta Werner, first violin; Jon Leff, bass; and Emily Winkler, cello; and junior Isaac Adamiak, viola.
These students will rehearse and perform under the direction of John Fetter, of the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York. The performance will be Nov. 15 at Fox Chapel Area High School.
n Sixty students from North Allegheny School District have been selected to participate in the 2009-10 Allegheny Intermediate Unit Apprenticeship Program.
The apprenticeships consist of a half-day or all-day learning experience each month over a six- or seven-month period during the school year. Students meet with professionals who share their experience, expertise and enthusiasm for the work.
The program provides hands-on, behind-the-scenes experiences and allows students to make connections with groups and people who can help them as they pursue their careers. They will participate in apprenticeships in advertising, animation, architecture, art, astronomy, biotechnology, broadcast journalism, business, civil and environmental engineering, conducting, education, engineering, filmmaking, international affairs, journalism, journalistic writing, marine biology, musical theater, nursing, photography, visual arts and zoo animal care.
• Twenty-five high school students from North Allegheny School District were selected for the 2009 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association honors orchestra and four more students were selected as alternates. The students selected are:
Max Adzema, Krissi Francioni, Emily Gibbs, Tim Napoli and Will Oestreich on viola.
Yeram Lee, David Lee, Hannah Rhee, Christine Seol, Erin Smith, Philip Song, Michael Tsang, Carol Wang, Liyang Yu, Lily Zhang, Kathy Zhang, Amy Zhang, Linda Zheng and Kyle Zhu, on violin
Lucas Song, Leah Dutton, Ben Suhrie, John Yang and Kevin Zhu on cello and Laura Waroblak, on bass.
Alternates are Connor Goodman, viola; Evan Lee, violin; Dan Mallampalli, bass; and Steven Smith, cello.
