Fox Chapel Area High School senior Lisa Liu recently won second place for her creative nonfiction blog entry, "Phobophobia," in the Ralph Munn Creative Writing Contest.

Her entry was featured on the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Web site, the clpteensburgh blog, and in the Ralph Munn Creative Writing Anthology, a book of creative work distributed to Allegheny County libraries.

• These North Hills School District musicians recently were selected for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Senior High District I Orchestra Festival today-Jan. 12: Senior Madison Fischer (violin); juniors Elena Gowdy (clarinet), Stephen Knott (trumpet) and Samantha Bell (French horn); and sophomores Christie Adamiak (violin), Shannon Kelley (viola), Eric Meister (bass), David Vevers (trombone) and Tommy Ulrich (trombone).

• Drawings by two Osborne Elementary students recently were selected from among more than 100 submissions in the district's holiday artwork contest.

Fifth-grader Kara Fleury's whimsical drawing of an owl was chosen for the cover of the district's holiday card and fourth-grader Gwen Nace's hot chocolate scene was selected as the district's submission in the Allegheny Intermediate Unit holiday artwork contest.

• North Hills High School senior Jennifer Wright was chosen as the November Student of the Month from among 300 applicants in a nationwide contest conducted by Troy43.com, an arm of the Troy and Theodora Polamalu Foundation, run by the Pittsburgh Steelers strong safety and his wife.

Jennifer was nominated by English teacher Mark Franks. She volunteers wrapping bread for Thanksgiving for a local charity and also at the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon.

• Gifted support students in the exploring engineering scenario from Seneca Valley Intermediate High School were winners in the recent Chain Reaction Contraption Engineering Competition at Carnegie Science Center.

Team members were Emerson Maloney, Tanner Quiggle, Cole Davis and Andrew Lingenfelter, along with supporting team members Kobie Rankin, Cory Nagel, Mitch Lachat and Jeff Rodrigues.
