North Allegheny High School seniors Katherine Zhou and Lily Zhang finished in second place for their performance at the National Forensic League National Speech and Debate Tournament. Katherine and Lily performed in the duo interpretation event, where they presented their interpretation of "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" by Amy Chua.

• Fox Chapel Area High School junior Lauren Thaete, who plays tenor saxophone, was selected to perform Friday and Saturday with the 2012 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 1 Honors Jazz Band East ensemble made up of student musicians from Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

• Three Pine-Richland High School students were chosen for the recent National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security program on "Exploring American Diplomacy, Intelligence and Defense." The school was represented by sophomores Anya Chopra and Laila Ohlund and senior John Goebel.

• Students from Fox Chapel Area High School and Shady Side Academy attended the recent World Affairs Institute for Student Leaders in Pittsburgh.

Representing Fox Chapel Area were Franny Dean, Justin Dembowski, Lindsay Gorby, Maz Jahnke, Zachary Kiehn, Kristo Penner, Stephen Polcyn, Sophie Roe, Konrad Urban and Eleanor Zinn.

Shady Side Academy students were Cristina Bartolacci, Lucy Buckman, Margaret Elias, Akul Mitra and Charlotte Verstraeten.

The topic of the 43rd World Affairs Institute at the Heinz History Center was "Understanding the Global Economic Meltdown."
