North Allegheny superintendent recommends closing Peebles Elementary School

North Allegheny Superintendent Raymond Gualtieri officially has recommended that the district close Peebles Elementary School beginning with the next school year.
Mr. Gualtieri made the recommendation at the school board meeting Wednesday.
"The North Allegheny School District has an obligation to all of our constituents to operate in the most efficient and fiscally responsible manner possible," he said.
And, although closing Peebles could save $850,000 a year, administrators say the recommendation is being made because of declining enrollment and excess capacity at the elementary level.
Mr. Gualtieri also recommended that the board hold a public hearing on the closure in January and vote in April.
Board President Maureen Grosheider said closing a school is not a done deal.
"Don't presume that board has made any decision," she said. "We will continue to listen. We will continue to read anything that anybody sends to us."
Parents continued to urge the board to reconsider. A parents' group gave the board its own analysis, "Save NA Schools: Community Report," that contradicted district enrollment and capacity figures.
