The teachers at Shaler Area School District have been working without a contract for 500 days. Last night, enough residents came to protest this situation that the January board was moved from the regular board room to the auditorium at the middle school on Mount Royal Boulevard.

Residents urged their board members and children's teachers to reach a compromise and complete a contract. "We want this to be resolved," said Scott Harris, a parent from the Burchfield area of the district.

James Giel, board president, told residents the two sides met, via a mediator, Tuesday evening but no progress was made. Sticking points, he said, are salaries, health care and class sizes.
