New Castle police have arrested a 66-year-old man they said drove off the road and struck a pair of boys, killing one and injuring the other Sunday afternoon.

Virgil Coonfare is charged with one count of homicide by vehicle in connection with the death of a 7-year-old, whom police did not identify.

Police and Lawrence County dispatch said the 7-year-old and a 9-year-old were playing outside of a home near Stanton and Winslow avenues when Mr. Coonfare veered off the road and hit them around 2:15 p.m. The younger boy was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The 9-year-old was flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.
