The Mars Area school board on Tuesday approved a $686,200 contract with Tedesco Construction Co. to build an access road to the elementary school.

The road will begin at Three Degree Road, run along the back of the elementary school, and connect with the road in front of the administration building.

Board President J. Dayle Ferguson said the road has been a "board priority" for many years.

"It is a public safety issue with one entrance in and out of that school," she said. "Hopefully, this will also alleviate some of the traffic on [Route] 228 in the morning and afternoon."

The contract will be funded from the capital improvement fund.

Tedesco was the lowest of 12 bidders.
