The younger brother of the Mars Area High School student who started honoring those killed in the Sept. 11 attacks has received permission to continue the annual display.

"I am asking to do it for the next three years of my high school career," Kyle Thomas, who will be a sophomore this year, told Mars Area School Board Tuesday.

His brother, Brian, now a student at Grove City College, began the tradition two years ago by placing flags on the high school lawn for every person killed in the attacks. The display is usually up for two or three days around Sept 11.

His request was approved unanimously. Board President J. Dayle Ferguson called the display "a Thomas tradition and a Mars Area tradition."
