An Indiana County man was ordered today to stand trial on charges that he shot and killed his father-in-law after his wife sent him divorce papers.
Shaun Fairman, 32, of Creekside, remains in the Indiana County Jail on charges of homicide, burglary, assault and receiving stolen property. Police said he tried to break into the North Mahoning home he previously shared with his wife, Jessica, early on June 3, and was confronted in the kitchen by Ms. Fairman's father, 55-year-old Richard E. Shotts.
Mr. Shotts told Mr. Fairman to put down the gun and lowered his own weapon to his pocket. Police said Mr. Fairman then fired once, striking Mr. Shotts in the neck. Mr. Shotts fired at least three times during the fracas.
Police said Ms. Fairman rushed her mother, Candice, and two of her children to the attic, grabbed a .22-caliber pistol and retreated to a back bedroom, where she shot Mr. Fairman twice in the arm and then held him at gunpoint until police arrived.
