Seneca Valley will begin allowing their students to play a sport in place of taking physical education class in 2012-13.
The opportunities that are offered at schools today are endless.
In the story "New plan calls for sports to earn fitness credit," (Jan. 20), assistant superintendent Matt McKinley said, "The amount of opportunity our students have continues to amaze me."
There are so many courses that students can take throughout the school year.
Replacing gym class with a school-sponsored sport that a student may already participate in allows students to take more academic classes.
The main concern for school districts should be academics. Eliminating gym class allows students to focus on their academics and opens up half of a credit in a student's schedule to take another class that will help them further in life.
Students who do not participate in a school-sponsored sport still must take physical education class. Every student at Seneca Valley will remain healthy and involved in some sort of physical activity of their choice.
I believe that this is a fair agreement that Seneca Valley has come up with for their students. It allows their student to become more academically enriched, it opens up their class schedules and it keeps them healthy.
