Hampton to address middle school language, elementary math

Next year's middle school program of studies and a completely new elementary math series will be on the agenda when the Hampton Township school board meets next week.
The board spent most of Monday night's meeting discussing the proposed changes and a timely presentation by several of the students in middle school's new Mandarin language course began the session. There are 16 students enrolled this year and, according to Superintendent John Hoover, the course is proving so popular that district administrators are planning to add a Mandarin II class next year as well and two more sections of Mandarin I.
Changes for next year include the addition of a sixth grade health class and changes to the world language classes that are offered on a rotation basis. A "foundations in language" class will be offered instead and will align with new state education standards.
New state standards are partially behind a proposed in-depth mathematics course at the elementary level that will require extra work on the teachers', students' and parents' behalf. A committee of 18 elementary teachers, one representing each grade at all three of Hampton's elementary schools, has been studying options for the past year. They have visited several schools, including North Hills and Shady Side Academy, to learn which program will best meet the needs of students and new standards recently adopted by the state.
The board will vote on one of the two programs being recommended by the Hampton teaching staff at its voting meeting set for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11.
