Hampton sets budget meeting at work session

At its work session tonight, Hampton Township school board heard from Jeff Kline, director of administrative services, about the district's new Act I Index and how it would affect next year's budget.
The district cannot raise taxes more than 2 percent (after applying for a 3/4 percent exception from the state) without a voter referendum. "If we can't balance the budget by other means," Mr. Kline stated he would have to have a preliminary budget prepared by January 31 to meet state guidelines.
Therefore the board would have to schedule a special meeting, continued Lawrence Vasko, finance chairperson for the board: "On January 28 we will have a voting meeting to decide if we need to take an exception and notify the state."
Superintendent John Hoover pointed out that Hampton Township School District has applied for an exception only once since Act I was instituted.
Also, according to a reported given earlier by Mr. Kline, revenues are up in the district from both real estate and earned income taxes thus far.
